"This book describes and defines inclusive research, outlining how to recognize it, understand it, do it, and know when it is done well. In doing so it will address the areas of overlap and distinctiveness in relation to participatory, emancipatory, user-led and partnership research as well as exploring the various practices encompassed within each of these inclusive approaches. The book will focus on how and why more inclusive approaches to research have evolved. It will position inclusive research within the key debates and shifts in policy, define key ideas and terms, disuss the contested nature of inclusive research and illustrate a range of approaches using examplars. The aim is to discuss the range of challenges involved and to examine the degree to which these challenges have so far been met."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Social scientists have identified a need to move beyond the analysis of correlation among variables to the study of causal mechanisms that link them. Nicholas Weller and Jeb Barnes propose that a solution lies in 'pathway analysis', the use of case studies to explore the causal links between related variables. This book focuses on how the small-N component of multi-method research can meaningfully contribute and add value to the study of causal mechanisms. The authors present both an extended rationale for the unique role that case studies can play in causal mechanism research, and a detailed view of the types of knowledge that case studies should try to generate and how to leverage existing large-N data to guide the case selection process. The authors explain how to use their approach both to select cases and to provide context on previously studied cases.

Given the explosion of information and knowledge in the field of Life Sciences, adapting primary literature as materials in course work as part of active learning seems to be more effective in improving scientific literacy among science undergraduates than the pure transmission of content knowledge using traditional textbooks. In addition, students also read research articles as part of undertaking laboratory research projects useful for preparing them for graduate school. As such, a good grasp of reading and analytical skills is needed for students to understand how their research project contributes to the field that they are working in. Such skills are being taught at UK and USA universities. In Asia, this approach in teaching has not yet been as widespread, although similar ideas are beginning to be used in education. Written as a quick guide for undergraduate students and faculty members dealing with scientific research articles as part of a module or research project, this book will be useful, especially in Asia, for students and faculty members as the universities look to incorporating the use of scientific research articles in their undergraduate teaching. For Life Science students, the first time they encounter a primary literature can be rather daunting, though with proper guidance, they can overcome the initial difficulties and become confident in dealing with scientific articles. This guidebook provides a structured approach to reading a research article, guiding the reader step-by-step through each section, with tips on how to look out for key points and how to evaluate each section. Overall, by helping undergraduate students to overcome their anxieties in reading scientific literature, the book will enable the students to appreciate better the process of scientific investigations and how knowledge is derived in science.

Social movement studies have grown enormously in the last few decades, spreading from sociology and political science to other fields of knowledge as varied as geography, history, anthropology, psychology, economics, law, and others. With the increasing interest in the field, there has also been an increasing need for methodological guidance for empirical research. This volume aims at addressing this need by introducing the main methods of data collection and data analysis as they have been used in past research on social movements. The focus is on the how-to-do-it, rather than, for example, on reviewing existing research using specific methods. Each chapter presents specific discussions on the main steps of research using a certain method: from research design to data collection and the use of the information. In this, dilemmas and trade offs are presented, illustrated mainly from materials from the authors’ own research. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are included: among them, protest event analysis, network analysis, surveys, frame and discourse analysis, archival and oral history, ethnography, grounded theory, in-depth interviews, group interviews, life histories, qualitative comparative analysis, comparative historical analysis, visual analysis. Epistemological and ethical issues, as well as the use of new technologies, are covered as well.--
